Artist Statement

A fascination with texture and detail kick-started my interest in art. It was in the techniques of hyper-realistic pencil drawing that I encountered the important process of breaking down complex, realistic images into seemingly insignificant, textural components. Throughout the development of my work in filmmaking, I have continued to discover this concept of abstract reconstruction through the themes and techniques that I explore.

As a Christian, my life has always been tightly interwoven with existential questions of faith, meaning, and human nature. It has been through seeking to unpack the depths of my own beliefs, and the views of others, that I have been inspired by the techniques of avant-garde and surrealist cinema. The process of uncovering the internal patterns of life through the layering of abstract details provides a unique lens for viewing ontological questions on God, morality, and purpose.  My practical approach to filmmaking has been shaped by the surrealist proposition that film, in its essence, offers an invitation into a waking dream-state, in which the filmmaker uncovers their intimate perceptions of the world and boldly presents them as an immediate communal experience, revealing aspects of our selves, relationships, and culture, that would otherwise remain unseen.
