AN INVENTORY OF TRACES
SHORT FILM | 3 MINS | EXPERIMENTAL
I AM
The “shifting divisions” of history provide an unstable foundation for the formation of our own sense of identity, this short experimental media artifact An Inventory of Traces aims to meditate on the reality of this concept through balancing romanticism and realism within both the natural world, and the newly founded digital world.
The conceptualisation of identity as understood through the biblical perspective underlines the inability and insufficiency of humanity to define their own existence without the unchanging foundation of God, YHWH, the name meaning “I AM”. This media artifact aims to place emphasis upon this insufficiency while glorifying the “I AM” as the deeply meaningful and emotionally legitimate foundation for understanding identity, place, and belonging.
These themes have been formed and inspired by the works and writings of Hall, S. (1995) ‘Cultural Identity and Diaspora’, Anderson, B. (1983) Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism, McLoone, M. (2005) "Realism, Romanticism and the Documentary Form: Robert Flaherty's Man of Aran", Gibbons L. (2014) “Romanticism, Realism and Irish Cinema”, and Lewis, C. S. (1952), Mere Christianity.
